Giant Bluefin Tuna: John and Chandra

Captain John Gavin comes from a traditional fishing family and learned this trade through his youth under the watchful eye of his father. John has over 30 years of experience fishing full time, most of those as captain. John’s wife and fishing partner Chandra has been a part of John’s fishing family for over 30 years, and has been John’s deckhand since 2006. They are occasionally accompanied by one or more of their three children, Sarah, Jenna and John Jr, who all love being on the ocean and participating in the various fisheries. Their middle child Jenna currently holds the IGFA Junior Female Bluefin Tuna record for a fish she caught with her dad in October of 2014. Their youngest, John Jr., has made it very clear that he intends to follow in his dad’s footsteps!

Craig Wallace has been with John and Chandra since 2016 and has become in integral part of the team. Craig’s wiring skills have not only been stellar with the clients, but also as an important part of Chandra’s two IGFA light tackle records for giant bluefin tuna. Craig is a lifetime fisherman, chasing lobster, tunas and swordfish, to name a few, on the harsh Atlantic Ocean, since he was just a teenger. Loved by the charter clients for his Acadian French accent, his fishing stories and his work ethic, once you meet Craig, you’ll have a friend for life.

Captain John fishes out of his custom-built 45’ Hustler fishing boat the “Game Changer”. The boat is powered by a 625 hp Volvo engine and is equipped with a bow thruster (a rare find in a fishing vessel around here and a handy thing to have when you’re fighting giant Bluefin Tuna!). The boat has a full array of electronics, a Kenwood Bluetooth stereo, lots of plugs for charging cameras and electronics (both standard 120 volt plugs and usb plugs), private bathroom with electric flush toilet, four sleeper bunks, running hot water, fridge, microwave, coolers, and a Release fighting chair.
